Chapter Seventeen
“I cannot believe this,” Jason said. He was slouched in one of the uncomfortable little chairs in his hut, going over his hand-written checklist for the days ahead. “You’ve had some really shitty ideas, but this takes the fucking cake.”
“Oh my God,” Laura said. “You’re going to be fine.”
“I’m going to get eaten alive…”
“Well, yeah, you’re going to get some more bug bites,” Laura said. She was lying crossways on Jason’s cabin bed, her legs stretched up the wall and her head dangling toward the floor. “But I promise I’ll get you back in one piece.”
She held up the handgun she’d been carrying around camp since the bears had started making regular visits in search of more NutriSnacks. They were all going to get one. Every single one of them, even Anders, was going to be packing heat in the great unknown for four days.
“So, just curious,” Jason said. “How much water do I have to inhale to not drown, but still be in a coma?”
“I thought you liked Anders’ sudden, uh, absence from your personal space,” Laura said.
“I like salmon, too,” Jason said. “Amazing how a little context can change—”
“And blowjobs—”
“Laura!” Jason sat up suddenly in his chair. “Oh my God…”
“You’re not exactly being subtle,” Laura said. She twisted her neck to get a better look at his face. “Well. I can tell.”
“Tell what?” Jason said. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
He hadn’t had time to explain to Nick that Laura knew him better than most people knew themselves. It was pointless to try to keep a secret from her. He’d try, but it was pointless.
“Like this is the first time you’ve gone off alone with a guy and suddenly become nemeses with each other,” Laura said. “What’s his problem? Does he have a teenie weenie?”
“Okay, I’m not discussing this,” Jason said.
“He’s making you keep a secret, then,” Laura said. “Does he have a boyfriend?”
“I told you…”
“Or he thinks he’s straight,” Laura said, “And he doesn’t want anyone to know he sucked your…”
“He didn’t suck my dick,” Jason said. He smirked at Laura, who grunted and shuffled until she was sitting up on the bed like a human being.
“He gave you a hand job,” Laura said.
“Nope.” Jason’s expression did not change. “And I’m not going to discuss this any…”
“Ahhhh,” Laura said. “You gave him the handjob, and he cried.”
“Will you stop?” Jason said. “He didn’t...I didn’t…” He spluttered for a second. “Ugh, just shut up about it, okay?”
“Shut up about it?” Laura laughed. “Fuck you. This is the most entertaining thing that’s happened to me in three weeks.”
“You work for AnTek,” Jason said. “Me giving handjobs and getting disappointed should be old news to you by now.”
“So, you did,” Laura said. “Did he cry?”
“Oh my God.”
“Jason, have you ever met a straight man?” Laura drew her knees up to her chin and grinned at him. “It’s a reasonable question…”
“He did not cry,” Jason said. “He just...I don’t know, I guess he was uncomfortable or something.” He shrugged.
